A Portland hit and run accident recently sent a 20-year-old man to the hospital with serious injuries. The victim was left with fractures to his spine, broken bones, a lacerated spleen, road rash and bruises. The man was coming home from work when he was hit and left in the roadway. Police are searching for the driver that hit the victim or any information leading to the driver. Hit and run accidents can be particularly serious and the actions of the driver can be considered especially reprehensible. Those who fail to remain at the scene of an accident can face serious criminal penalties. This is particularly true if someone suffered injuries or was killed in the accident. Even if the accident did not result in serious injury or death, failure to leave insurance information can also result in serious consequences for a driver who fails to do so. Even if the driver that struck the victim does not remain at the scene and is not able to be identified or located, the same legal remedies available through a personal injury claim may be available to the injured victim. Victims may find a need to recover damages, including medical expenses and costs, lost wages, lost earning capacity and pain and suffering damages, for injuries. Following an accident, it is important that the victim keep a list of medical expenses and may wish to record the progress of injuries that were suffered in the accident. This is because even if the hit and runnegligent driver is not identified, uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance coverage may compensate the victim for a claim.
